Apparently, “Bad Moms” was such a surprise hit (as if it was still a surprise that in 2016, there was a market for R-rated shock-comedies starring women) that the makers got Mila Kunis and everyone else back together to crank out a sequel in a little more than a year. Even better (as in not better), it’s Christmas themed. So we have “A Bad Moms Christmas” (2017) trying to catch lightning in a chimney. But whereas the original had just the right amount of mommy pathos, this one overdoes things (sequels always do) by pitting the moms against their moms.
It’s one of those movies with a bunch of seemingly unrelated story lines that somehow are supposed to come together. It’s one of those movies with an eclectic ensemble of veteran stars (Jack Lemmon!), up-and-comers (Julianne Moore!) and WTFs (Huey Lewis?). It’s one of those Robert Altman movies. So you know all the critics and artsy-fartsy types loved “Short Cuts” (1993). I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Twenty-two major characters, and not a one of them is likeable. They’re all somewhere on a continuum from pathetic to despicable. I get it, Robert. Life in L.A. sucks. Your point?
There’s so much I want to say about “While You Were Sleeping (1995), I don’t know where to start. When I finally saw it, 19 years after it came out, it was a revelation. A romantic comedy where you don’t have to cut off your balls (spoiler alert) in order to enjoy it. Sandra Bullock does the vulnerable thing so well, you wonder where it comes from (Then you see how she is today, and you know.). My first wife had such a crush on Bill Pullman. After seeing him here, I now know what she saw (briefly) in me.
