Back in 1998, when not everybody had cable, TNT took a bunch of movie stars and threw them together with a B-list cross between Ryan Gosling and Ryan Reynolds for a film that turns out to be a rom-com hiding inside a legal procedural. “Legalese” stars James Garner (who, admittedly, is also a TV star) as a high-profile L.A. attorney asked to defend a movie star (Gina Gershon) accused of murder. Edward Kerr is Garner’s neophyte protégé. Mary-Louise Parker is Garner’s more experienced protégé and Kerr’s rom-com foil. The rest is dull-edged satire about lawyers, television, journalism and pop culture.

I’m so glad “Red Sparrow” (2018) didn’t suck. Because somebody told me it sucked. I shouldn’t have believed them. Maybe it was a double cross. Maybe they actually liked it but they wanted me to not like it so that I would be surprised it didn’t suck because they wanted me to trust them but then not trust them. Oooooh, so crafty. The movie’s like that, too. Jennifer Lawrence is performing at another level right now. It’s her, Jessica Chastain, and, um, right. Also, best three-way knife fight in movie history. And definitely the Oscar frontrunner for best one-piece swimsuit.
I assume “R.I.P.D.” (2013) was filmed in 3-D, because that would explain all the unnecessary, distracting visual effects. Alas, I watched it on my 13-year-old, 22-inch, analog TV, so I only got 2-D: dopey and derivative. I can imagine the Hollywood lunch where it was green-lighted. “Guys, imagine this – ‘Men in Black’ meets ‘Ghostbusters’ with Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, plus Ryan Reynolds to get the teenage girl audience the first weekend! It’s a surefire hit!” This is another movie based on a comic book (pardon me – graphic novel). Unless you’re a 22-year-old boy (or 13-year-old girl), pass on it.
