Relationship comedies are not romantic comedies. In rom-coms, there’s a payoff that allows you to put up with all the cliches and mediocre dialogue. In relationship comedies, the couple(s) start out together and just bicker for two hours, often ending up worse off than when the film started. Which brings us to “The Weekend” (2019), in which someone thought it was a brilliant idea for a still-rebounding single woman to invite her ex to a B&B (who then also invites his current squeeze) for the weekend. There’s also a mysterious stranger. Hijinks (bickering) ensue and nobody learns anything about themselves.
