“Police Academy” (1984) proves a movie doesn’t have to be good in order to spawn 800 sequels. Here, a ragtag bunch of misfits becomes a lean, mean fighting machine and saves the day. Not really. Here, a bunch of TV sitcom writers and directors, given the opportunity to say naughty words and show boobies, totally forget to the plot while stringing together 96 minutes of cliche, pratfalls and close-ups of Steve Guttenberg. Ever wonder what Kim Cattrall was like before she died her roots and got all shoe-crazy? She’s Guttenberg’s love interest. There’s also Bubba Smith. And not much else.
