People are shit. That doesn’t mean you should treat them like shit. There’s your takeaway from “Small Time” (2014). Ironically, it does such a fascinatingly good job of drawing you in, you see its flaws that much more clearly. Like the fact that it takes place in a recent L.A. past before cellphones (but with cordless phones that had three-foot-long antennae), yet I kept seeing relatively new cars on the street and one character mentioned a George Foreman Grill. Christopher Merloni, meanwhile, plays the slickest used car salesman ever when he’s not being the most decent father and ex-husband ever.
